Celebrating Women’s Health & Wellness

Celebrating Women’s Health & Wellness

This women’s month, Notes of Nature celebrates all women, the daughters, sisters, girlfriends, lovers, wives, daughter-in-laws, sister-in-laws, mothers, aunts and grandmothers.

In the multitude of roles you play, whether it be friend, philosopher, teacher, nanny, nurse, housemaid, entrepreneur, manager, business executive and many many more, make sure you are making health and wellness your priority.

Are You Making Your Health and Wellness Your Priority?

Are you taking time to exercise, eat right, get enough sleep, schedule preventative health care visits, managing stress to ensure wellness and seek medical attention for health issues as they arise?

While it is not always easy to take steps for better health, and every woman has her own approach, it is vital to find a way that works for you.

Take time to reflect on your health goals, what motivates you, and what’s holding you back from being your healthiest you.

Proactive choices that support health and wellness ensure that you are able to perform your best at work and at home.

While our definition health, balance, and wellness is personal and different for everyone, and is dependent on the stage and phase of life, the steps that build a foundation of good health are the same at any age:

  • Visit a health care provider for checkups, preventative screenings, and vaccines
  • Get active
  • Eat healthy
  • Pay attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress
  • Practice safe behaviours, such as quitting smoking, not texting while driving, and taking steps to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections.
  • Supplement where necessary to ensure optimal health and wellbeing

Understanding Women’s Life Stages

Women’s life stages are based on the reproductive cycle, beginning with menstruation and ending with menopause.

Women’s life stages are often marked by specific signs and symptoms, such as menstrual cramps, mood swings, hot flashes and weight gain. Understanding how healthy lifestyle choices can help you feel your best at any stage

Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur in women typically between ovulation and a period and is likely to involve changes in hormones during menstrual cycle. It is usually self-treatable and self-diagnosable.

Symptoms can include irritability, mood swings, food cravings, depression, tender breasts, lack of concentration, acne, weight gain.

Perimenopause or Menopause Transition

This is the transition from the reproductive age through to menopause. Menstrual cycle become irregular or variable in length.

Menopause

Is the permanent cessation of menstruation and is indicated after 12 successive months of NO menstruation. It is a normal physiologic process that occurs in aging women caused by a reduction in egg cells in the ovary which results in the decline of iatrogenic production and ultimately the cessation of menstruation .

Menopause may also be caused by a surgical procedure (eg hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries ) or treatment of certain conditions (eg chemotherapy and antioestrogens used in the treatment of breast cancer).

Managing Health and Wellness Through Women’s Life Stages

Natural Supplements to aid in managing hormones

Chaste Tree Berry Extract for Treatment of Menstrual Problems

Chaste tree berry (also known as Vitex Agnus-castus) is well known for its benefits in premenstrual syndrome but has also shown benefits in decreasing the number and severity of hot flushes associated with menopause and has also shown improvement in night-time sweating.

Dong Quai Extract for Menopause & PMS

Dong Quai is effective in treating hot flashes.

It has been used traditionally for women who need to “enrich” their blood and may also aid in issues like premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menopause, and cramps.

Mexican Wild Yam, a “natural alternative” to estrogen therapy

Diosgenin or wild yam is often promoted as a “natural alternative” to estrogen therapy, so you will see it used for estrogen replacement therapy, vaginal dryness in older women, PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menstrual cramps, weak bones (osteoporosis), increasing energy and sexual drive in men and women.
