Cardiovascular Health

Cardiovascular problems, or problems that affect the heart and blood vessels, are some of the greatest overall health problems worldwide.

A number of risk factors increase the chances of developing cardiovascular problems later in life such as age or a family history.

People can take steps to reduce their risk for cardiovascular problems with simple lifestyle changes. For example, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and quitting smoking can all reduce the likelihood of developing cardiovascular problems.

Managing Cholesterol

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is an important component for building healthy cells. Cholesterol is carried through the blood, attached to proteins. The combination of protein and cholesterol is called a lipoprotein.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) transports cholesterol throughout the body. When there are excessively high levels of LDL cholesterol, it can cause a build-up of cholesterol and other deposits on the walls of the arteries (known as atherosclerosis). For this reason, LDL cholesterol is known as the ‘bad’ cholesterol. These deposits (plaques) can reduce the blood flow through the arteries. If the plaques tear or rupture, a blood clot may form at the plaque-rupture site, blocking the flow of blood. A clot may also break free and plug an artery downstream in a narrower part of the artery. If blood flow to part of the heart is blocked, it causes a heart attack. If a clot blocks blood flow to the brain, it causes a stroke

What causes high cholesterol?

High cholesterol can be inherited, but it is often the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices. Factors that may increase the risk of high cholesterol include:

Obesity        Diabetes       Poor diet       Lack of exercise       Smoking

Large waist circumference

Milk Thistle extract has antioxidant properties and has been widely used in treating hepatitis. New research has shown that it lowers total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in Type 2 diabetic patients. It has also demonstrated that it lowers fasting blood glucose levels in these patients.

Research has demonstrated that  Olive Leaf Extract reduces total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Olive Leaf Extract also has a blood pressure lowering effect and reduces arterial stiffness.

Cayenne Pepper Extract may reduce plaques in blood vessels by breaking up the fibrin networks that hold the plaques in place. Cayenne Pepper Extract may also reduce the formation of blood clots, thus assisting in keeping the blood flowing freely through the arteries and veins

Devils Claw is an herb and gets its name from the appearance of its fruit, which is covered with hooks meant to attach onto animals in order to spread the seeds. The roots and tubers of the plant are used to make medicine. It contains chemicals that may reduce pain and swelling and has therefore been used in the treatment of ailments such as arthritis and muscle pain. Devils Claw has also been used for atherosclerosis

Blood Pressure Management

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the most serious risks factors for death from heart diseases and strokes, responsible for 13% of all deaths globally. In South Africa more than 1 in 3 adults live with high blood pressure and it is responsible for 1 in every 2 strokes and 2 in every 5 heart attacks.

High blood pressure is known as a ‘silent killer’ because there are rarely any symptoms or visible signs to warn that blood pressure is high. That is why more than 50% of people with high blood pressure are unaware of their condition.

Symptoms of high blood pressure

Do not wait for symptoms to appear. High blood pressure becomes more likely with older age, but anyone, no matter their age, gender, fitness level or lifestyle can develop high blood pressure. Blood pressure should be measured at least once every year.

Symptoms that can be experienced:

  • Headaches
  • Visual disturbances
  • Nose bleeds
